The Story

For the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, The Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation hired IDEKO to install and operate a single high-intensity light beam to commemorate the plane crashes in Shanksville, PA, and the Pentagon in Washington, DC.  These beams of light illuminated the Washington, DC, and Western Pennsylvania skies from 8 PM-1 AM each night from 9/10-9/12, 2021, providing a stunning reminder of the tragedies in each location on September 11, 2001.

To create these illuminations, we used 44 Syncrolites in each location, all focused on forming a single beam that shot thousands of feet into the sky.  At the Flight 93 Memorial, only 40 of the Syncrolites were lit to recognize only the 40 heroic passengers on Flight 93.

It was an honor and privilege to help the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation commemorate the 20th Anniversary of 9/11.

Our Role

  • Production and logistics

    • Site Prep

    • Light Installation

    • Venue Management

    • Security

    • Labor

    • Site Supervision

  • Permissions & Permitting

    • Pentagon & National Park Service security clearances

One of the most complex aspects of the production was the FAA coordination necessary to navigate the heavy air traffic from Reagan National Airport. We worked very closely with the FAA to ensure no impacts or interruptions to the DC air traffic.

We also worked very closely with the Audobon Society to monitor the many birds who become caught in the light beam and regulate turning off the lights at specific intervals to assure birds can escape the beam safely.
